Getting to Queenstown

Today I woke up and began the two day descent to Queenstown.  I rode the InterCity bus heading to Franz Glacier.  The bus driver was adamant that everyone have an accommodation reservation, so I missed the Pancake Rocks stop to book a hostel for the night.  The only hostel I could find was in Fox Glacier.  This bus driver was the first person challenging my last-minute to everything approach.  I was pissed.  I spent most of the 10 hour bus drive sleeping.  I have 10 more hours of bus tomorrow.  I would have flown had not so many people raved about the drive, relating it to Big Sur, a drive down the coast of California.  It was pretty indeed, but had an element of redundancy just a few hours in.

The best part of the trip was stopping in Hokitika where I walked down to the beach and collected beach wood.  It was littered across the sandy beach.  Locals had build art sculptures with the wood and stones.

Hokitika is a Maori word for ‘place of return’
